Depression Treatment
A recent article in the New York Times highlighting a new study on the over-use of anti depressants caught my eye. For years I have been issuing depression treatment depressed patients without suggesting they use anti-depressants of any kind. I get patients whose other therapists and psychiatrists have tried everything—some have even been suicidal—and yet I almost always get a positive result in those cases when others don’t.
For some people it is true that depression is a result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. But, as this article points out, for many other individuals, it can be their perception of depression and/or the over-availability of anti-depressants that drive them to take medication. As the article states:
Experts have offered numerous reasons [why the use of antidepressants has skyrocketed]. Depression is common, and economic struggles have added to our stress and anxiety. Television ads promote antidepressants, and insurance plans usually cover them, even while limiting talk therapy. But a recent study suggests another explanation: that the condition is being overdiagnosed on a remarkable scale.
The study, published in April in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, found that nearly two-thirds of a sample of more than 5,000 patients who had been given a diagnosis of depression within the previous 12 months did not meet the criteria for major depressive episode as described by the psychiatrists’ bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (or D.S.M.).
I have had tremendous success using depression treatment for my patients who suffer with depression by teaching them to change their inner script, reverse negative thought habits, and improve their external surroundings. Furthermore, if depression stems from a profound unhappiness or past trauma, you will never overcome that with a pill. That’s why addressing the source of one’s depression from a deep emotional/mental approach so often is the answer.
