Mediterranean Style of Eating
A study published this week in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine caught my eye because of the staggering scale of its method and the striking results. The study was conducted by analysing the diet and medical records of more than 10,000 women, which was collected starting all the way back in the 1980s. All these women were in their late 50s or early 60s and were free of major chronic diseases at the start of the study. About 15 years later, the same women gave information on their diet and their health and the results are dramatic.
The study found that women whose diets were based heavily on a Mediterranean style of eating (which is light on processed grains and carbohydrates as well as dairy) were 40 percent more likely to reach the later decades without developing chronic diseases and memory or physical problems (and to live longer in general), compared to women who ate lots of processed foods and starches.
Whenever people doubt my dietary advice I always like to point to studies like these, as they definitively show that a diet heavy in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish, natural fats like olive oil and avocado, and lean meats like chicken and turkey not only helps you lose weight, but also helps you live longer. Giving up nutritionally bankrupts foods like cereals, breads, rice, pasta, refined grains, sugars and lots of dairy not only helps your waistline, it simply means you’ll live longer.
Try making my mediterranean frittata for dinner tonight and toast to a long, disease free life with a slim waistline:
- Sautee leeks, purple onions, courgettes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, in a large pan with olive oil.
- In a bowl, whisk 6 eggs with fresh herbs and a bit of sea salt and pepper
- Once the veggies are cooked, distribute evenly throughout the pan and pour egg mixture on top.
- Turn heat down low and let the underside of frittata cook.
- Remove from hob and put in oven to finish cooking the top of the frittata.
- Remove from oven and slice avocados to place on top if you wish
This serves two. Or you can save the second portion to take as a carb-free lunch for the next day. Serve a green salad or extra grilled veggies on the side. Help promote your own weight loss.
